Background
Doug Masiuk, founder of OutRun Diabetes, created his first 1 Mile event in 2013. This was bare bones, grass roots but a start. Like many great initiatives beginnings can be simple. Of greatest importance people came.
Since then there have been events in communities all around the US. With local sponsors, media, recognized speakers this has always been a work in progress improving upon lessons learned, great community support and wonderful volunteers this has got us this far.
All organizations face challenges. Here is ours: Covid in 2021. To have in person events with current best practices of social distancing this has made us put one part on hold and create offer something new. The current ability to join in from wherever you are , what time of day from the use of an app allows us to engage, get others to move and show solidarity to better Diabetes by moving that 1 mile.
With the addition of doing the 1 Mile Diabetes events virtually does not mean that we are not preparing to continue with future in person events.
This is what we do. Who we are. Something that we take great pride in.
If you are interested in helping to create a 1 Mile event for Diabetes in your community please let us know. This is how most have started. One cause, great people and others to join in.
